Young mezzo-soprano Daiyao Zhong is currently an undergraduate scholarship recipient at the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Mignon Dunn. After participated in Maryland Lyric Opera Young Artist Institute last summer, she returns as Alisa in MDLO’s production Lucia di Lammermoor this year.
In 2017, Daiyao Zhong made her debut as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro with New York Lyric Opera Theatre in the National Opera Center. In 2018, she was invited back again and appeared as the 3rd lady in Die Zauberflöte. In 2019, she will sing the role of Nancy in Britten’s Albert Herring in the senior opera project of Manhattan School of Music.
As one of the young emerging artists, Ms.Zhong has made impressive appearances in masterclasses, operas and concerts among the United States. In the summer of 2016 and 2017, Ms.Zhong participated in the International Vocal Arts Institute (IVAI) in New York and was invited to the Canada Vocal Arts Institute (CVAI) in Montréal with a full scholarship. In IVAI, she performed in the American Music Concert and sang the title role of Massenet’s Cendrillon and the role of Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte in the Opera Scenes Concert.
During her study in Manhattan School of Music, she performed the role of Erika in Baber’s Vanessa and Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito with MSM Junior Opera Theater. Her other previous scene roles include: Siebel (Faust), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Mallika (Lakmé), Giulietta (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) and Dido (Dido and Aeneas).
Last fall, Ms.Zhong was the alto soloist in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy for the Neidorff-Karpati Hall Grand Reopening Concert and the alto soloist cover in Beethoven Symphony No.9 for the Centennial Opening Concert of the Manhattan School of Music.
